News Union for the Mediterranean: ARLEM local and regional authorities discuss local water management, urban development and territorial dimension

Members of the Euro-Mediterranean Regional and Local Assembly (ARLEM) will meet for a plenary session in Agadir (Morocco) on 29 January to discuss the adoption of three reports prepared in 2010.

A press release said the meeting comes at the invitation of Mohamed Boudra, the assembly's joint president and president of the Taza-Al Hoceima-Taounate region, and will be the first to be held in a southern Mediterranean country since the assembly was set up.

This joint assembly, co-chaired by Committee of the Regions' president Mercedes Bresso, supports dialogue and the exchange of expertise on tangible issues between local and regional authorities on both sides of the Mediterranean.

The discussions will focus primarily on the adoption of three reports drawn up in the course of 2010. The first is on local water management, the second on urban development and the last on the territorial dimension in the Union for the Mediterranean. The reports are destined for the UfM and its general secretariat.

To prepare for 2011 deadlines, the ARLEM bureau adopted a policy declaration last October highlighting its priorities as the Union for the Mediterranean process moves forward. Among other things, the members of ARLEM are calling for a ministerial-level meeting on urban development of the kind the assembly has already been involved in on water and the environment. As a result of the work initiated in the spring and at previous Bureau meetings, ARLEM has been granted observer status in the UfM.

ARLEM is a consultative assembly, which aims at bringing a regional and local dimension to the Euro-Mediterranean partnership. It gathers 84 members from the EU and its 16 Mediterranean partners who are representatives of regions and local bodies holding a regional or local authority mandate. The inaugural ARLEM meeting took place on 21 January 2010 in Barcelona.
