Second International Conference on Climate, Sustainability and Development in Semi-arid Regions (ICID 2010)

The ICID 2010 meeting in Fortaleza from 16 to 20 August 2010 will provide a forum for sharing and comparing findings from research and practice on means for improving wellbeing and reducing vulnerability of peoples in arid and semi-arid regions worldwide. To achieve these goals ICID is soliciting papers related to the four conference thematic areas. Based on these papers and on those presented within thematic streams, ICID will produce and publish recommendations to guide analysis and policy aimed at reducing vulnerability and improving the lives of the people of semi-arid lands around the world.

The mix of papers at the meeting will be selected to address the ICID 2010 thematic areas outlined above. The selection committee will seek a balance in papers addressing different categories of climate stressors (slow onset or sudden events) and a mix of approaches to vulnerability reduction, adaptation, and development for populations at risk. We encourage historical depth and grounded field-based research in case studies. Studies can be of individual cases or can be comparative synthesies across cases on climate data use, mitigation or vulnerability reduction. They can cover specific areas, sectors or target groups, such as water resources, agriculture, land use, energy, social groups, traditional communities, gender issues, youth, ecosystems, biodiversity, human activities, institutions etc, or they can cover a region or compare different regions. We also encourage cross-cutting studies on such topics as analytic tools, conflict and violence, and migration.
