Project Innovative processes and practices for wastewater treatment and re-use in the Mediterranean region

A research project supported by the European Commission under the  Sixth Framework Programme Specific programme: Integrating and Strengthening the European Research Area Activity area: Specific measures in support of international co-operation for Mediterranean Partner Countries (INCO-MPC).

INNOVA-MED "Innovative processes and practices for wastewater treatment and re-use in the Mediterranean region" is a Coordination Action started in January 2007 that will last 3 years. The Consortium is composed by 13 partners that, in addition to EU countries, involves members from Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Palestine and Turkey.

Note: The budget listed below is only the budget corresponding to the Egyptian partner

Project number INCO-CT-2006-517728
Subject(s) CHARACTERISTICAL PARAMETERS OF WATERS AND SLUDGES , DRINKING WATER AND SANITATION : COMMON PROCESSES OF PURIFICATION AND TREATMENT , PREVENTION AND NUISANCES POLLUTION , RIGHT , SANITATION -STRICT PURIFICATION PROCESSES , WATER QUALITY
Acronym INNOVA-MED
Geographical coverage Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Palestine, Turkey, Spain
Budget (in €) 30816
Programme INCO MED (FP6)

Objectives The objectives of the project are:

  • coordinating the research activities of ongoing EU and national projects dealing with development of innovative technologies for wastewater treatment and treatment and disposal of sludge and with application of innovative practices for re-use of reclaimed water;
  • facilitating the transfer and use of knowledge and technology in the Mediterranean Partner Countries (MPC).

In reference to the last point, a number of training course will be organised with the aim to develop capacity building at the local level. The last course, held in Turkey,  was dedicated to "Innovative Processes and Practices for Wastewater Treatment and Re-use".

INNOVA-MED expert groups

Five expert groups will be established, horizontally linking the complementary research of different projects coordinated by INNOVA-MED and facilitating the transfer/dissemination of their results and achievements to the researchers, end-users and stakeholders from the MPC. Three expert groups will focus on technical developments related with the wastewater treatment and re-use, while two expert groups will cover socio-economic and management aspects.

No Expert group domain
1 Contaminants in the water cycle
Dealing with fate and analysis of xenobiotics in wastewater treatment processes; development, optimization and validation of analytical tools for measuring and monitoring of contaminants in wastewaters
Lead: participant 13 (EFF, Germany)
2 Advanced technologies for wastewater and sludge treatment
Dealing with engineering aspects of water treatment technologies; development and application; scaling up of technologies from laboratory scale to pilot, demonstrative scale and full scale.
Lead: participant 10 ( CIEMAT, Spain)
3 Re-use of reclaimed water and treated sewage sludge
Dealing with re-use of treated effluents for irrigation practices, indirect potable re-use and sludge use in agriculture
Lead: participant 2 (INRGREF, Tunisia)
4 Constraints of application of advance treatments and re-use of reclaimed water and sludge
Dealing with socio-economic, legal/regulatory, technical, and environmental barriers of the re-use of reclaimed water and sludge and of the application of innovative treatments
Lead: participant 12 (Ecologic, Germany)
5 Integrated management of wastewaters in the Mediterranean area
Dealing with different aspects of wastewater management and water resources management. This will be done through assessing the technical, financial, socio-economic, institutional, and regulatory influences on integrated wastewater management.
Lead: participant 4 (BZU, West Bank)

INNOVA-MED courses

The training program for young scientist, practitioners, end-users and other interested parties will consist of a series of INNOVA-MED courses organized in MPC countries.

Course 1 - Turkey, 8-11 October 2007 (download presentations)
Course 2 - Tunisia, 21-23 November 2007( more information....)
Course 3 - Egypt, April 2008
Course 4 - Morocco, December 2008
Course 5 - Palestine, June 2009

The courses will cover the following topics:

(1) Scientific/technical training on the different thematic areas involving the analysis of wastewaters and their treatment and re-use with the specific topic as follows:

  • Advanced chemical methods for the analysis of microcontaminants in urban and industrial wastewaters and sludges
  • Biological assessment of wastewaters and sludges (acute toxicity, immunotoxicity, genotoxicity, estrogenicity)
  • Monitoring tools (in situ, on line)
  • Health aspects of the presence of xenobiotics and patogens in relation to re-use of reclaimed water
  • Innovative technologies for WW treatment (membrane technology (MBR, nanofiltration, ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis); advanced oxidation or reduction technologies; advanced bioactive technologies (aerobic or anaerobic)
  • Technological innovations for alternative water supplies, including municipal and industrial wastes, drainage and brackish waters
  • Strategies and technologies for reducing excess sludge production in biological wastewater treatment processes
  • Technologies for post-treatment of sludge

(2) Thematic training on global issues with the following specific topics:

  • Legal, regulatory, socio-economic, financial, environmental and technical constraints of application of advanced treatment technologies
  • Legal, regulatory, socio-economic, financial, environmental and technical constraints of re-use of reclaimed water and sewage sludge
  • Decentralized management of wastewater treatment and re-use for small communities
  • Recycling of water in industry
