World Science Forum 2013: "Science for Global Sustainable Development"

For the first time the World Science Forum (WSF) will be held outside Europe. The sixth WSF will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from 24 to 27 November 2013. The main theme of the 2013 World Science Forum will be “Science for Global Sustainable Development”.

The Forum will be hosted by the Brazilian Academy of Sciences in partnership with, UNESCO, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the International Council for Science (ICSU), the European Academies Science Advisory Council (EASAC) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). 

The forum is one of the world’s major science focused event. It normally brings together over 600 scientists and provides linkages between scientists, industry and policy makers. The forum also provides an opportunity young scientists and researchers to participate in and lead debates. This year’s opening ceremony will take place at the Municipal Theatre of Rio de Janeiro and the remainder of the forum will be held at Hotel Windsor Atlantica in Brazil.

Inspired by the success of the World Conference on Science that was organized by UNESCO and the International Council for Science in 1999, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences offered to host a series of follow-up conferences under the name of the World Science Forum in 2003. Following that commitment, every two years in the city of Budapest, UNESCO, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the International Council for Science (ICSU) would collaborate to organize the forum.
