Event Workshop on Knowledge and Practices of Using Treated Sewage Sludge on Land

The Workshop on Knowledge and Practices of Using Treated Sewage Sludge on Land, will be held on 15-16 April 2008 in the Cambridge University (UK) in cooperation with CIWEM (Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management) and the SORP (Sustainable Organic Resources Partnership).

The current EU Directive on the use of sewage sludge in agriculture was agreed in 1986 but this was based on the knowledge of the evaluation of the risks of such practices provided by the COST 68 programme during the early 1980’s. So the baseline is now about 25 years old. There is a current wave of interest in re- evaluating risks using modern techniques and with the benefit of some 25 years experience in using the Directive. The EWA has decided to organise one of its reknown high focus workshops to review current knowledge  with the support of CIWEM and SORP in the UK.

The desk officer from the European Commission Mr. Bartosz Zambrzycki (EC DG ENV) has agreed on attending the workshop as speaker.

Experts from all over the European Union and other European countries represented in the EWA will attend the workshop.

OBJECTIVE: A frank and open discussion leading to an output summarising views expressed which will be sent to the European Commission. The intention is to give delegates an opportunity to participate in an important opinion shaping event. An opportunity will be given to delegates to bring posters.
