Wastewater collection and treatment for Tarfaya
Wastewater collection and treatment is a key issue in national water policies. At present, less than 5% of household discharge is treated, posing a serious threat to the environment and public health. Accordingly, it was agreed that Belgium would help Morocco to catch up in this area in both rural and semi-rural settings.

Objectives | The project aims to provide the town of Tarfaya with a separate network for collecting wastewater, a pumping station and a forcemain, and a wastewater treatment plant using anaerobic lagooning with a view to the possible re-use of treated water for the controlled irrigation of crops. The objective of the action focuses on living conditions and public health, which will be improved by better hygiene conditions. In addition, the environment will be protected by a reduction in pollution in the water table and the discharge of wastewater via an appropriate system. | ||
Results | Progress: Work on the sewer network was completed in March 2005. Private connections have not yet been made; they are dependent on the construction and commissioning of the pumping station planned for 2007. Work on the forcemain and the treatment plant was completed in December 2005. Outlook: The challenge of wastewater collection and treatment can only be met once the people have been made aware that they will have to pay their share for private connections. It was agreed to launch a massive awareness-raising campaign and to prepare an action plan in this connection. |
