Project Euphrates-Tigris Initiative for Cooperation

The Euphrates-Tigris Initiative for Cooperation (ETIC) is a Track 2, academic initiative founded in 2005 by scholars from Iraq, Syria, Turkey and the USA . Its principal aim is to provide opportunities to enhance the dialogue and mutual understanding among the riparians of the Euphrates-Tigris System. ETIC is dedicated to the improvement of the living conditions of the people in rural and urban areas in the Euphrates Tigris region, strengthening cooperation and sustainable development in harmony with nature using scientific means, advocacy, research and education. SIWI has a staff member (Jakob Granit) on the ETIC advisory committee.

The Euphrates and Tigris (ET) Rivers are located in a region which extends over parts of six countries: Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Syria, and Turkey of which Iraq, Syria, and Turkey are the prime riparian. The surface area of the Euphrates Tigris region is nearly 819.000 Km2. The ET region is a focal point in world affairs due to its geopolitical conditions in addition to the diversity of its strategic, socio-economic, and hydrologic features.

ETIC is Unique:

-It is the only cooperation initiative in the region for the benefit of the riparian countries.

-It is a track-two effort whose aim is to facilitate dialogue and mutual understanding among the riparian stakeholders and decision-makers.

-It uses a development focus and avoids contentious themes.

-It is a neutral and facilitating platform
