This is particularly true in arid and semiarid regions of the world. In many parts of the world, hydrological gauge stations are few and water inventory is incomplete. Poor knowledge of spatio-temporal distribution of surface water makes it difficult for water resource managers and policy makers to develop adequate water management plans and to establish wise water-use policies. Quantifying and modeling water cycling at various spatial scales have been important and active research fields for the past 50 years. Remote sensing can play a significant role in determining evaporation and transpiration and surface water production capacity of various surface cover types, and in estimating the spatial distribution of water balance and scaling up site specific measurements of water quantity and quality to regional and global scales.

It hoped that this publication will stimulate researchers worldwide to perform additional in-depth work and analysis on the exploitation of space borne remote sensing technology for water resources in Africa.

<dc:title>Application of Satellite Remote Sensing to Support Water Resources Management in Africa: Results from the Tiger Initiative</dc:title><dc:identifier>http://www.emwis.net/topics/fol573816/fol522448/application-satellite-remote-sensing-support-1</dc:identifier>
<dc:description>
IHP-VII – Technical Documents in Hydrology, No. 85

The European Space Agency (ESA) in the context of the Committee of Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS) started the TIGER initiative as a concrete action following the resolutions of the World Submit on Sustainable Development held in Johannesburg. The initiative aims at assisting African countries to overcome problems faced in the collection, analysis and dissemination of water related geo-information by exploiting the advantages of Earth Observation (EO) technology.
