2. Rational and objectives of the workshop:

The Second WMO-MEDARE workshop builds on the results and agreements taken under the First WMO International Workshop on Climate Data Rescue in the Mediterranean Basin and in the experience and activities carried out by the MEDARE Community since its inception, which was endorsed by WMO EC-60 on June 2008. The workshop will focus on the strategies for the development of long-term and high-quality climate databases for the Mediterranean Basin, which can support an enhanced detection, prediction and adaptation to climate change and its impacts over the Mediterranean socio-ecosystems. It is mainly addressing the MEDARE Working Group 1 (WG1, see at http://www.omm.urv.cat/MEDARE/working-group-1.html) and MEDARE Steering Group (SG, see at: http://www.omm.urv.cat/MEDARE/steering-group.html) members, while it is open to other scholars and scientists interested in climate data and metadata rescue, preservation, digitization, homogenization, archiving and dissemination across the Mediterranean countries. The following topics will be addressed:

  1. The key role of developing high-quality and long-term climate data and metadata databases in support of an enhanced climate change and climate change impacts research in the Greater Mediterranean Region (GMR.)
  2. Assessment and definition of a Greater Mediterranean Region reference climatological network to be used by scientists, stakeholders, policy-makers and the general public (*).
  3. The implementation of a metadata inventory on a country-by-country basis, targeting the longest and key national climate records, both digitized and non-digitized time series (*).
  4. Identification and implementation of WMO-MEDARE projects and funding possibilities at international, European and national scales.
  5. General discussion and agreement on the WMO/MEDARE data exchange policy.

(*) The invited participants (WG1 members) have an active role prior to and during the workshop. Participants will prepare a metadata inventory to be presented during the workshop. The inventory is focused on the longest records (particularly air temperature, surface precipitation and sea level pressure) available in the participating countries databases / archives and other sources, in digital, paper or other format. This exercise is essential for the identification of the reference climatological network for the Greater Mediterranean Region and, therefore, targets and prioritizes records to be urgently rescued. The main outcome of the workshop would be the definition and implementation of a long-term programme focusing on the development of long, high-quality climate databases for the Mediterranean Basin available from the MEDARE Portal.
