Waste management and treatment: GMI project launches a survey with young people and local actors

Assessing the level of knowledge of young people with regard to sustainable development and identifying territorial dynamics which impact waste management: these are the objectives of the survey launched by GMI project.

Students, schoolkids and actors of local value chains: GMI project is interested in your experience and expectations about waste recycling.

In the framework of its preparatory activities which will lead to the installation of reverse vending machines in 200 schools and universities, GMI project is launching a study aimed at establishing a comprehensive picture of waste management practices and policies in six countries of the Mediterranean area (Egypt, France, Italy, Lebanon, Spain and Tunisia).

GMI project in brief

Promoting the sustainable development related to waste treatment and recycling, encouraging environmental education among young people and ensuring a change in their behaviour towards the environment are the main objectives of the "Green Med Initiative" (GMI). The project has a total budget of just over €4 million, and is coordinated by the Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture of Beirut and Mount Lebanon. Other chambers of commerce as well as environmental and regional associations and municipalities from six countries participate in the project.

The project will develop an incentive-based scheme to promote environmentally sustainable practices in schools and universities. More specifically, a considerable quantity of used plastic bottles and cans (estimated amount of 20 tons) will be collected through Reverse Vending Machines placed in 200 schools and universities across six countries of the Mediterranean area. At the same time, in order to encourage youth to strengthen their environmental responsibility and knowledge, environmental awareness activities will be implemented.
