News Education for Sustainable Development: H2020 workshop trains Tunisian educators to promote de-pollution and environmental issues

39 Tunisian educators from schools, ministries in charge of education and environmental issues and NGOs working with students attended a workshop entitled “Education for Sustainable Development” and organised by the Horizon 2020 Capacity Building/Mediterranean Environment Programme (H2020 CB/MEP) to build their capacities in promoting environmental and sustainable development issues.

The workshop discussions and exercises focused on the principles and concepts of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and how to apply those teaching methods to the thematic areas of Horizon 2020.

Specific themes of the workshop included how to educate students about water threats, on how to ensure water quality, on product life cycle analysis, and about consumption behaviours.

The two-day training, organised in collaboration with the Mediterranean Education Initiative for Environment and Sustainability (MEdIES), was largely delivered through experiential workshops and group work. It was based on educational materials developed by the MEdIES network (‘Water in the Mediterranean’ and ‘Waste in our lives’) that relate to the thematic areas of H2020.

The Horizon 2020 Capacity Building/Mediterranean Environment Programme (H2020 CB/MEP) aims to support the implementation of the Horizon 2020 Initiative Road Map and Work Plan through capacity building and awareness raising activities, and to promote integration/mainstreaming of environment issues into other sector policies.

The Horizon 2020 initiative aims to improve the quality of life of more than 420 million citizens living in the 25 countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea. It is an umbrella programme drawing together all the policies, strategies and action plans for enhancing environmental protection.
