News The European Water Association acknowledged Professor Peter Matthews ( UK ) with honorary member-ship

Vienna, July 2011 – At the EWA Council meeting on the 1st July 2011 the European Water Association (EWA) decided to acknowledge Prof Peter Matthews (OBE) for his work and contribution to the association for last 30 years and bestowed him as an honorary member. Prof Matthews is active within the EWA since its establishment in 1981.

As one of the key figures in the water and environmental sector, Professor Matthews has been involved in the water industry for over 40 years. He devoted much of his work for the benefit of the European Water Association and in 1997 he was appointed as the EWA president.

He remembers still very well his first meeting of the Management Committee of the EWA (back then the EWPCA – European Water Pollution Control Association) in October 1981.

“We just arrived in Stockholm and were ready to have our meeting when we heard that a Soviet submarine had reached the waters of Sweden . The submarine was stuck in the rocks, but we were very frightened and were happy to be able to go home safe. It was an unforgettable first meeting.” – explained Prof Matthews.

Prof Matthews has been involved in the management of the association for many years, but also contributed strongly to the technical and scientific work of the committees and the working groups of the association.

Peter Matthews is a Chair of Northern Ireland Authority for Utility Regulation. In 2007 he has been made Officer of the Order of the British Empire for his services to the Water Industry and to the Environment. In 2010 Prof Matthews has been awarded with the William Dunbar Medal for his contribution to the field of water and wastewater technology and management.

Peter Matthews is a true innovator and committed professional who has worked tirelessly to bring the industry together to share a global vision of water management. We are really delighted to have had the pleasure working with him for the past 30 years and we hope that this fruitful cooperation will continue in the future.
