SDC: Sustainable Sanitation and Water Management Toolbox

The "Swiss Army Knife" for Water and Sanitation!

The lack of knowledge of handling drinking water and sewage in developing countries creates major health problems. The new “Sustainable Sanitation and Water Management Toolbox”, which is co-financed by the SDC, provides comprehensive assistance for improving water and waste water management.

Worldwide, there are more mobile phones than toilets. And for almost one billion people, access to safe water remains a dream. Knowledge of sustainable approaches to managing water and waste water is often lacking – and so is the awareness that both are inherently connected and must be considered jointly. SDC has thus co-financed the development of a comprehensive and freely available “Toolbox” for sustainable sanitation and water management, with which existing knowledge can be made accessible to as many users as possible.

seecon gmbh has developed the Sustainable Sanitation and Water Management Toolbox together with 16 international partners. The Toolbox provides answers to all questions regarding sustainable water management and sanitation, and focuses on closing local water and nutrition loops. It is designed for different users, including NGOs, planners and development organisations, who will be able to find specific information on making water management and sanitation more sustainable at the local level. In addition, it provides a comprehensive overview of different solutions and gives equal importance to technical measures and behavioural learning processes.

The Toolbox is regularly used by a large network of organisations in developing countries to run practice-oriented courses on sanitation and water management.

In the future, the toolbox will also be available offline. The Toolbox is open source and freely-accessible on www.sswm.info.
