Project Officer: Adaptation and Sustainable Water Management

The European Secretariat of ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability, based in Freiburg, Germany, seeks to fill the position of Project Officer in the field of adaptation and sustainable water management.

Adaptation to the impact of climate change is an issue of cross-cutting nature, addressed by ICLEI through a range of activities under different themes and by different units, including Climate & Air and Sustainability Management. The holder of this position will mainly - but not exclusively - work with adaptation issues. The position will also extend into issues of  sustainable local water management.

The ICLEI European Secretariat is currently leading a new project on Cities and Adapatation in India and the Philippines, providing cities with scientific information and supporting the development of local adaptation plans. The project is funded by the German Ministry for the Environment. ICLEI is also involved in SWITCH - Managing Urban Water for the City of the Future, and the ACCESSanitation (Accelerating City-to City Exchange on Sustainable Sanitation) project, also in India and the Philippines but with an awareness raising aspect for Africa.


MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES


Supporting the implementation of current adaptation and water management projects, with particular regard to:

• Management and administration of projects, including monitoring of project implementation and reporting to the European Commission;
• Organisation and delivery of project-related events;
• External communication with project partners, donors and others;
• Dissemination of project and other information through various ICLEI and non-ICLEI media, including concept development and maintenance of project and other websites;
• Assistance in the representation of ICLEI and its adaptation and water programme at international events, ranging from small project meetings to large policy conferences;
• Contribution to the development and acquisition of future projects in adaptation and water management.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

• Academic degree in a relevant subject, such as environmental sciences, environmental governance or urban planning and management, development issues, water management, climate change;
• At least one year's work experience in a related field;
• Sound background in the area of local government and sustainability policies and management;
• Creative, forward-thinking and a pro-active attitude;
• Confidence in communication, especially when dealing with external partners;
• Strong organisational skills;
• Capacity to work both independently and within an international team;
• Ease in writing different types of text for various target groups and serving distinct purposes;
• Fluency in English and preferably one other European language;
• Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Access, Powerpoint), InDesign and website content management.

CONDITIONS

• Place of work: ICLEI European Secretariat, Freiburg, Germany
• Full-time position with 40 working hours per week
• Six weeks of paid leave per year
• German social security benefits
• Working language: English
• Annual gross salary bracket EUR 27,600 - 30,000, depending on qualifications and professional experience

COMMENCEMENT AND DURATION OF CONTRACT

Start of contract: 1 May or 1 June 2010

Duration of contract: Initial period one year. Extension is anticipated, but dependent on future funding.
