Civil protection programme: GIS not effectively used for risk assessment in Southern partner countries‏

The EU-funded Programme for Prevention, Preparedness and Response to Natural and Man-made Disasters (PPRD South) has reachedtheconclusion that ‘Geographical Information Systems (GIS) for civil protection are used mainly for managing assistance and only in a few countries for risk assessment.

A press release said that from the information provided by participants to a training workshop on the use of GIS for civil protection organised by the project in Rome, it appears that most of theCivil Protection Authorities of the PPRD South countries are provided with GIS. However, the majority of them use GIS mainly for managing assistance, and only s few of them have set up GIS for risk assessment.

Country-by-country information, which clearly illustrates the background of the "prevention and preparedness" component of the PPRD South Programme, is briefly summarised in the press release.

The objective of the €5 million PPRD South programme is to develop and reinforce the prevention, preparedness and response capacities of civil protection services in the Euro-Mediterranean regionthrough increased institutional cooperation between the EU and the Mediterranean partner countries.
