News Wastewater Treatment And Reuse 2009: Current And Future Opportunities In An Expanding Market

MEED’s Wastewater Treatment and Reuse Conference 2009 is set to open its doors on the 8th December 2009 at the Sheraton Abu Dhabi Hotel & Resort, UAE.

MEED’s annual two day conference has become a firm fixture in the calendar for anyone with a vested interest in the Gulf region’s wastewater treatment and reuse industry and, this year, includes a welcome address from H.E. Dr Salem Al Dhahiri, Ministry of Environment and Water, UAE and an opening keynote address from Mohammad Al Hajjiri, Head of Water Forecasting Section, ADWEC which will feature a forecast on the future water demands for Abu Dhabi.

Already the most water scarce region in the world, the Gulf has had to contend with huge population growth in recent years and with it demand for potable water has soared. Wastewater treatment and reuse is the need of the hour and vital to help cope with the increasing demand. Across the region, much of the existing sewage treatment infrastructure is over twenty years old and is incapable of meeting today's requirements, both in terms of handling volumes and treating effluent to international standards. As such, taking the necessary action to ensure the region has adequate wastewater treatment capacity is now a priority for the region’s utility providers.

Edmund O’Sullivan, Chairman of MEED Events explained, “Governments in the Gulf are increasingly recycling treated water as a cost-effective solution to growing demand. According to our own research, more than 5.5 million cubic metres a day of new treatment capacity is expected to be added in the GCC alone, which presents a huge business potential for those providing equipment, services and finance to the region’s wastewater sector.”

“MEED’s Wastewater Treatment and Reuse 2009 conference reports on the most significant projects taking place across the region, identifying where the key opportunities exist. MEED Projects-CMI has identified that WWTP projects in the top 5 regional markets combined are worth in excess of US$ 14 billion, with projects in the UAE market alone valued at over US$ 5.5 billion.”

MEED was the first conference organiser to identify both the tremendous growth and potential of the water treatment industry in the MENA region as well as recognising the importance of wastewater reuse as a key element of an integrated water resource management strategy. Since the first Wastewater Treatment and Reuse Conference in 2005, subsequent conferences have continued to address credible topics relevant to the industry’s key stakeholders.

The 2009 conference features detailed analysis of case studies from across the region, including an examination of the regional strategies for private sector involvement from Saudi’s National Water Company. The importance of emerging markets will also be featured as Iran opens up its wastewater sector. MEED’s Wastewater Treatment and Reuse Conference 2009, sponsored by Drake & Scull International, will also include exciting project case studies from the region and will feature a Gala Dinner sponsored by Azaliya, the new company created by Veolia and Mubadala.

As is the hallmark of all MEED conferences and events, leading industry representatives from across the Gulf region will be present, offering delegates insightful updates on recent trends within the regional wastewater industry. The event is an in-depth review of the Middle East's expanding water industry with a comprehensive line-up of clients, leaders, innovators and speakers including Mohammed Abdulaziz Najem Al Awadhi, Director of Wastewater Treatment, Dubai Municipality; Abdullah Al Hashimi, GM Projects, Haya Water, Oman; Mohammad Najjar, Director of Programme Management Unit, Ministry of Water & Irrigation, Jordan, and Colin Hannan, Director of Water Services, Regulation & Supervision Bureau.

MEED’s conferences and events are widely respected throughout the region due to their strategic and analytical focus and Wastewater Treatment and Reuse 2009 is the ideal opportunity to meet the key stakeholders and influential decision-makers from the region and beyond. Through a series of panel sessions, presentations, armchair discussions and interactive debate, the 2009 conference will discuss how to capitalise on the future growth of the region's wastewater industry and help all attendees improve their understanding of the current status and predicted future opportunities of this expanding market.
