Slovenia: One third of water lost in faulty water works

More than a third of Sloveniàs drinking water is lost in the waterworks due to various faults in the system, the daily Ljubiana Dnevnik reported recently.

In the capital Ljubljana only, based on figures released by the utilities, 31% of the water that enters the waterworks is lost due to faults, old pipes, and poor maintenance. Another 5% of the water is lost through illegal use and theft from public hydrants.

To limit the losses, the Municipality has decided to invest around 4 million euros in the coming years to rebuild 15 km of the water distribution network. The oldest pipes will be replaced, some of them have actually been in use since 1888. The only countries that have recorded a higher loss of drinking water in Europe are the Czech Republic and Bulgaria.
