News Rapid infrastructure developments lead to US$68.2 billion investment in water projects

Rapid economic developments in Abu Dhabi have put extreme pressures on water supplies. The UAE'S groundwater supply has fallen by 18% since 2003 and consumption is exceeding resources by 24 times the natural recharge capacity.

  • Saudi Arabia is set to spend US$60 billion over the next 20 years to meet the Kingdom's water needs. A recent report shows the Kingdom's current water use is at an average of 5.7 million cubic meters per day and will reach 10 million cubic meters per day within the next 15 years .
     
  • Jordan royalty formulated a US$8.2 billion water strategy which has been given the go-ahead by His Majesty King Abdullah. The strategy involves a series of water projects that will help the Kingdom meet its water needs.

The UAE Ministry of Economy indicates that real GDP grew by 7.4% in 2008. This comparatively sharp escalation, coupled with infrastructure development, has contributed towards the challenges government bodies face meeting increasing demands for water.
