News The MDG Project in Crisis

A sobering interim review is emerging at the midpoint of the MDG Project. In order to get the world back on track in achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), at the invitation of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, a summit meeting of governments, business and civil society is to be held in New York on the 25th September 2008.

On this occasion, Jens Martens, Director of Global Policy Forum Europe, and Tobias Debiel, Director of the Institute for Development and Peace (INEF), have issued an INEF Policy Brief in which they give a brief stocktaking of what has been achieved so far as well as examining the deficits in implementing the MDGs. In order to successfully direct the project to the Millennium Development Goals, the authors recommend a change of course. It contains clear and binding commitments on the part of the industrialised countries, linking up the MDGs with a human rights approach in development co-operation, promoting functioning governance, strengthening capacities to establish and process data and overcoming technocratic solution approaches in favour of development strategies that also focus on structural causes of poverty.
