News Lebanon: USAID and Ministry of Energy and Water Sign Memorandum of Understanding to Extend Cooperation in Water

U.S. Ambassador Jeffrey Feltman and USAID Mission Director Raouf Youssef participated in a ceremony with Acting Ministry of Energy and Water Mohamad Al Safadi to sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for $1.3 million on August 3, 2007, to extend their partnership, strengthening water policies to bring clean water to Lebanese communities.

The goal is to help Lebanese water establishments, such that of South Lebanon, grow into strong organizations with solid business procedures, providing the people of Lebanon with safe and reliable water. Today’s MOU represents the third phase of the program designed to strengthen water establishment financial systems, train management and staff, and install meters to reduce water loss.

This MOU is the direct result of a long-term partnership between USAID and the Ministry of Energy and Water. It follows two previous agreements, all designed to support Lebanon in major reforms following the 221 law of May 2000 that restructured the water sector. Working together, USAID, the water establishments and the Ministry of Energy and Water are building the foundation for external investment in Lebanon’s water industry.

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has worked in Lebanon since 1951, funding development projects to benefit Lebanese citizens. In Lebanon, USAID creates jobs, invests in youth and protects the environment. With funds from the American people, USAID provides $40 million in assistance a year, working in partnership with Lebanese and U.S. organizations. USAID’s work reflects the strong friendship between the Lebanese and American people. For more information about USAID’s projects in Lebanon, visit USAID’s website.
