News Posting for a French-Speaking Gender and Water Consultant

The Gender and Water Alliance (GWA) is working in partnership with the Water, Sanitation, and Infrastructure Branch of UN-Habitat to mainstream gender in the Water for African Cities (WAC) Programme. The WAC Programme is currently in Phase II and consists of seventeen cities across Africa. The WAC Phase II includes the following components: Pro-poor Water Governance and Follow-up Investments, Sanitation for the Urban Poor, Urban Catchment Management, Water Demand Management, Water Education in Schools and Communities, Advocacy, Awareness-raising, and Information Exchange.

 

The GWA is looking for an on-call French-speaking consultant from the GWA membership[1]. The consultant would ideally be based on the African continent (not an absolute requirement), but must be familiar with French-speaking African cities and municipal governments.

 

Qualifications

  • Advanced university degree in one of the following areas or combination of areas – Sociology, Women’s Studies, Water Engineering, Community Development, Environmental Planning or another relevant discipline.
  • Three to 5 years of practical experience in gender-based analysis and management of gender mainstreaming tools.
  • Have good knowledge of the water and sanitation sectors in service provision or watershed management and environmental planning.
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with people from diverse socio-economic and cultural backgrounds.
  • Must be motivated and able to work independently as well as in a team.
  • Have knowledge and demonstrated experience in the use of participatory methodologies.
  • Excellent oral, written, and communication skills in French and English.
  • Knowledge of local languages is an advantage.
  • Have experience/knowledge of planning processes and methodologies.
  • Be available at short notice.

 

The applicant is expected to have her/his own computer and other relevant tools of the trade. The project will not be providing any office space, computers, fax machines, telephone lines etc. However, there will be some limited funds to cover basic communication costs with the GWA project manager.

 

Responsibilities

She/he will coordinate her work with the, the GWA Programme Manager, the GWA office, UN-Habitat staff and the City Manager of WAC’s French-language cities.

 

She/he will be required to maintain regular contact with and update the GWA Programme Manager and the GWA Secretariat as defined by the project requirements.

 

She/he will provide inputs, assessments and training in coordination with the GWA Programme Manager and the GWA Secretariat.

 

The consultant must be in good health and able and willing to travel out of the city and the country in which she/he is located.

 

She/he must be able to conduct training workshops on the basics of gender, water, and sanitation and following GWA objectives.

 

A performance assessment at the end of three months will determine if the consultant will be offered a follow-up contract to continue with the GWA in the WAC II or not.
