Euro-Mediterranean Information System on know-how in the Water sector - Communication plan

The overall objective of EMWIS is to enhance cooperation in the water
sector among the Euro Mediterranean partnership countries. It is an
information and knowledge exchange tool, whose goal is to implement the
Action Plan defined at the Euro Mediterranean Ministerial Conference on
Local Water Management, Turin, 1999-10-18/19.

First phase (1999-2002)

Results of the first phase were highly positive. EMWIS succeeded in
creating momentum among the Mediterranean Partner Countries (MPC), through
actively encouraging the principle of shared information and the development
of National Water Information Systems (NWIS) that could be integrated into a
seamless Euro-Med information system.

It consolidated its organisational framework, with a total of 20 National
Focal Points (10 MPCs and 10 EU member states), a technical unit, a
Steering Committee and a coordination committee.

EMWIS proved itself to be a unique platform
for the fostering of regional cooperation in the Euro-Med water sector,
providing effective support for EC water-related initiatives, such as the
MEDA-Water programme or the EU Water Initiative.

Second phase (2003-2006)

During its second phase, EMWIS has continued to consolidate its initial
results and to develop an integrated network of inter-operable National
Water Information Systems. In this context, the promotion of the system and
its approach is very important.

Complementary activities are also undertaken by the National Focal
Points, based on the same visual identity.
