Sustainable Tourism 2014 is the sixth meeting organised in this successful series. The first was held in Segovia (2004), followed by Bologna (2006), Malta (2008), the New Forest home of the Wessex Institute of Technology (2010) and A Coruña in 2012.

Tourism has become a major international industry, with many countries all over the world relying on the income it produces. Its economic advantages as a major source of finance and employment frequently leads to its active promotion by governments and other institutions, independent of the consequences on the environment, ecology and social structure of affected regions.

This conference will explore issues concerned with achieving environmental social and economic sustainability of tourism alongside the governance mechanisms needed to support sustainable tourism. It could also discuss how new resources ought to be employed to avoid the errors committed in the past and propose remedial actions when required. The meeting will also focus on empirical work and case studies from around the world, which can offer new insights and best practice guidance.

Sustainable Tourism 2014 will adopt a multidisciplinary approach and will aim specifically to foster greater understanding and collaboration between scientists and social science experts, practitioners and policy makers. It will take a broad view of this sophisticated and complex industry, and will examine the practice of sustainable tourism from global travel trends through to destination and site management. Innovative solutions are particularly welcome, including ecological tourism as well as cultural initiatives that will lead to better approaches to tourism with the objective of preserving the diversity of our planet.

The demands of tourism can contribute to the destruction of the natural and cultural environment upon which it depends. The natural and cultural landscape’s capacity to accommodate the local and worldwide effects of tourism and the implications for the human economy and society constitute very important study objectives.

Sustainable Tourism 2014 aims to find ways to protect the natural and cultural landscape through the development of new solutions which minimise the adverse effects of tourism. This can be achieved through new strategies involving the active collaboration of society as a whole.

Papers are invited on the topics outlined and others falling within the scope of the meeting. Abstracts of no more than 300 words should be submitted as soon as possible. Abstracts should clearly state the purpose, results and conclusions of the work to be described in the final paper.

We strongly encourage the submission of abstracts electronically, by clicking on the 'Submit an Abstract' button found at the top and bottom of this page. If you prefer, abstracts can be sent by email, fax or mail to the Conference Secretariat. Details can be found on the left side of this page.
