Event 2014 World Conference on Natural Resource Modeling

The Resource Modeling Association (RMA) warmly invites you to participate in their “2014 World Conference on Natural Resource Modeling” to be held in Vilnius, Lithuania during 8 – 11th July, 2014. The RMA is an international body of scientists working at the intersection of mathematical modeling, environmental science, and natural resource management. Its annual meetings provide a platform for genuine interdisciplinary communication and networking.

The theme for this conference is ‘Modeling our way back to the future’ and what better way to go back to the future than to be transported back in time in the ancient city of Vilnius (ca 1009AD). It’s UNESCO World Heritage listed Old Town features narrow cobbled streets weaving among historic buildings of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque construction styles. Throughout the formal program delegates will sit amidst the architectural splendour of a scholarly institution established in 1579. Among the oldest universities in Europe, Vilnius University is one of the few where its buildings and halls are still used for their original purpose.

The elegant architecture of the Old Town contrasts starkly with the perfunctory plattenbau designs of apartment blocks, cultural centers and sports stadiums that punctuate the vistas across surrounding suburbs, providing a more recent reminder of the post-war occupation by the Soviets that ended in 1991. Six keynote speakers will captivate and inspire you with a diversity of topics: Professor Claire Armstrong - Norwegian College of Fishery Science, Tromsø University, Faculty of Biosciences, Fisheries and Economics; Emeritus Professor Jim Kitchell – University of Wisconsin, Madison, Department of Zoology; Professor Martin Quaas - Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel, Department of Economics; Professor Steve Railsback - Lang Railsback & Associates and Humboldt State University; Assoc prof. Dr Walter Rossing - Farming Systems Ecology, Wageningen University Plant Sciences; and Professor Wayne Getz, UC Berkeley. Professor Railsback will also run a one-day introductory workshop on individual based models on 8th July. Avail yourself of the opportunity to reflect on the past, both progressive and regressive, whilst looking ahead and engaging in dialogue with resource modeling colleagues from around the globe about how we can pave the way for modeling to have relevance and practical application in a future world that is becoming increasingly challenged by climatic change and rising consumption from an expanding human population.

Despite the serious nature of the topics, RMA conferences are fun and conducted in a friendly atmosphere where delegates from a broad spectrum of disciplines and diverse levels of skill and experience freely exchange ideas, and expand their professional networks. So make a date in your calendar to come Vilnius in the summer of 2014 to share an unforgettable experience with resource modeling colleagues from around the globe!
