Event High-Level International Conference on Water Cooperation

The General Assembly welcomed the offer of the Government of Tajikistan to host in August 2013 in Dushanbe the high-level international conference on water cooperation in its resolution A/RES/67/204 on the "Implementation of the International Year of Water Cooperation, 2013". The Dushanbe conference constitutes one of the milestones of the International Year of Water Cooperation.

The conference will build on and pursue the deliberations of the High-level Dialogue in New York and the High Level Forum in The Hague on World Water Day, 22 March 2013, as well as other international and regional events on water cooperation.

It will contribute to achieving the objectives of the International Year of Water Cooperation, in particular:

  • mobilize stronger political commitment and actions towards the implementation of international agreements;
  • undertake more far-reaching public awareness campaigns, as well as education regarding effective water cooperation and dialogue;
  • promote the exchange of experiences in successful policies and best practices at the local, national, regional and international levels;
  • strengthen partnerships and cooperation between the public and private sectors, as well as among communities, local authorities and governments;
  • enhance international and regional cooperation.
  • A special exhibition will also highlight water issues and challenges faced by all nations and their populations.

In December 2010, following the proposal initiated by the Republic of Tajikistan and submitted by a group of countries, the United Nations General Assembly declared 2013 as the United Nations International Year of Water Cooperation (Resolution A/RES/65/154) to facilitate the coordination and collaboration in addressing emerging freshwater issues, and unite efforts undertaken by governments, international and regional organizations, business communities, scientists and other representatives of the civil society.

Background

To address effectively the freshwater issues and problems and recognizing cooperation as the key factor for this the UN General Assembly declared 2013 the International Year of Water Cooperation through the Resolution 65/154 accepted by a consensus on 20 December 2010.

To assist for successful implementation of this Resolution the UN General Assembly on 21 December 2012 has accepted the new Resolution "Implementation of the International Year of Water Cooperation, 2013", which encourages all measures and activities undertaken by all stakeholders at all levels on successful implementation of the Year, and calls the Member-states, organizations of the United Nations system and all other actors to continue to promote actions, including through the international cooperation, as appropriate, aimed at the achievement of the internationally agreed water-related goals.

This Resolution also includes convening the High-level International Conference on Water Cooperation.

The Government of the Republic of Tajikistan is pleased to host the High-level International Conference on Water Cooperation on 20-21 August, 2013 in Dushanbe, the capital city of the country.

Objectives

The main objective of the Conference is to contribute to improvement of water cooperation, in particular in a transboundary level, through advocating the successful policies and best practices, wider public participation, encouragement of policy makers to promote water cooperation at all levels for contribution to achieve the internationally agreed goals on water.

The Conference also gives an opportunity to discuss and develop new measures aimed to accelerate the efforts on achievement of MDGs and recommendations for further actions after 2015 including contribution to development of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related with water.

Organizers

The Conference will be organized by the Government of Tajikistan jointly with UN institutions.

To convene the International High-level Conference on Water Cooperation the Government has created an Organizing Committee under the chairmanship of the Prime-minister of the country H.E. Mr. Oqil Oqilov.

To promote the success of the Conference the International Steering Committee with involvement of politicians, scientists, experts and representatives of the international organizations has been to establish.

Language

Working languages of the Conference will be English, Russian and Tajik (simultaneous translation will be provided).
