Event Watch IMPRINTS Final Workshop: Implementing the EU Flood Directive in Flash Flood Prone Areas

The directive 2007/60/CE of the European Parliament and of the Council of 23 October 2007 on the assessment and management of flood risks requires Member States to draw up maps identifying all areas exposed to flooding risk and indicating the probability and the potential damage for local populations, property and the environment by the end of 2013. Moreover it requires to prepare and implement flood risk management plans for each river basin district including management measures focusing on reducing the probability of flooding and the potential consequences of flooding by the end of 2015.

The IMPRINTS Final Workshop aims to show advanced scientific and technical tools oriented to support the implementation of the EU Floods Directive in Mediterranean basins where flash floods are the main cause of the flooding events, and to raise a joint reflection between experts, technical responsibles, stakeholders and risk management authorities about the challenges of implementing the directive in these areas.

Thanks to the support of the Stream project*, the meeting and training sessions were web streamed. All meeting documents and some presentation of this webminar remain available online.

The Workshop took place at the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts (Brussels) on 27th September of 2012.

*STREAM project (Sustainable Technologies and Research for European Aquatic Management) is a EU project funded under the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7), DG Research, Environment. It runs from 01/01/2011 to 31/12/2012.

In 2000 the EU Water Framework Directive has set up a truly integrated Community policy. Today water scarcity and waste water management are two of the most relevant challenges that Europe has to face in the field of water crisis.

In this context, STREAM project aims at raising awareness on the state of the art of water technologies research and at bringing it to the interest of policy makers and potential up-takers through a diversified series of dissemination and communication actions tailored to the needs of the different categories of stakeholders: researchers, policy makers, industry and SMEs.
