Event Reconciling Health and Environment: a challenge for sustainable development in MENA region? - Realities and prospects

Objectives

The main objectives of the expert meeting are:

-          To introduce tools and methods developed by WHO and applied in the Region. These include environmental burden of disease assessment, environmental health indicators, environmental health exposure and risk assessment methods, and economic valuation of the burden of disease. Several case studies will be presented,

-          To familiarize ministries of health and environment with tools, strategies and initiatives that can support the two sectors in: influencing policies in other priority sectors (e.g. energy, transport, agriculture); in assessing health impact, and the costs and benefits of policy alternatives in those sectors,

-          To sensitize policy and decision makers and other stakeholders in the region of the economic benefits in addressing more effectively the issue of environmental impacts on health,

-          To facilitate the development of a Regional Work Plan, on the basis of a “first statement note” that will provide orientation. The note « Is this issue of Health and Environment, a challenge for development in the Mediterranean region? » will identify major issues, knowledge gaps, needs for building capacity, evaluate stakes and importance for development practices,

-          To strengthen the cooperation by providing a mechanism for sharing knowledge and experiences (a platform for knowledge management and technical support) between the countries, in addition to joint action.

Themes

The workshop will adopt the following themes:

-          Issues and strategies of environmental health links,

-          Showcasing why and how marrying environment and health makes sense
