Event Training on Activated Sludge (8 Hour)

This unit examines the principles of treating sewage and other biodegradable wastewaters by mixing, aerating and agitating them with active biomass [activated sludge]. The biomass in this mixture [mixed liquor] utilises the organic components that are present in the wastewater as substrate. Biomass concentrate is subsequently separated from the bulk liquid and most of it is returned for re-use to treat the incoming wastewater.

Key points covered in the unit include:

  • The chemical and microbiological principles of AS treatment
  • AS process design considerations - volumetric loading, organic loading, sludge loading [f/m ratio] and floc loading; solids retention time [SRT]; sludge age; flows and feeding; methods of aerating and settling mixed liquor; recycling biomass - returned activated sludge [RAS]; treatment/disposal options for the surplus activated sludge [SAS]; extended aeration; oxidation ditches; membrane biological reactors [MBRs] etc.
  • Nitrogen and phosphorus removal in an activated sludge plant
  • Operational control monitoring parameters - pH, dissolved oxygen; mixed liquor suspended solids [MLSS]; sludge settleability (stirred specific volume index [SSVI], sludge density index [SDI]) etc.
  • Operational issues - sludge bulking, filamentous bacteria, foaming, sludge blanket level etc., including examples and case studies

Provisional start dates for AS are:

w/c 17th October 2011

The cost of the unit is £352.50 (all inclusive). This unit has a learning time equivalent to 8 hours spread over 5 weeks.

To register for the unit please email Tom Owen or call 020 7831 3110.

Staffordshire University reserve the right to cancel any start date if there are insufficient registrants. No refunds can be made less than 14 days prior to the commencement of the unit although substitutions can be made at any time.
