Implementing an Environmental Management System

This unit begins by reviewing the ways in which organisations can contribute to the pollution of our environment and moves on to consider basic environmental and sustainable business practices. It explains how to go about formulating an environmental policy along with defining environmental objectives and targets, and writing action plans for your EMS. It covers the principles of good environmental management and stewardship, including the approach to an environmental review, management reviews and a continual improvement programme, and enables you to gain an appreciation of the wider impact of environmental policy and regulation in corporate environmental planning. The unit provides you with an overview of formal environmental management quality standards such as ISO 14001, EMAS and a phased approach using BS8555, together with an understanding of how environmental management systems such as these are audited and reported upon.

• Introduction to an EMS
• Writing an environmental policy; planning an EMS and carrying out an initial environmental review
• Implementation of an EMS and developing environmental procedures
• Environmental action plans, environmental performance procedures and checking/corrective action
• The management review and the continual improvement process
• EMS audit and certification/accreditation
• EMS for small/medium sized enterprises

The cost of the unit is £352.50 (all inclusive). The unit has a learning time equivalent to 8 hours spread over 5 weeks.
