Event SMAP III TA holds Sustainable Development workshops in Cairo

The first in a series of workshops focusing on Sustainable Development actions in local communities begins tomorrow, 15 November 2007, at the Environmental Awareness Centre in Marsaara, Cairo. The initiative is organised and promoted by the EU-funded SMAP III TA regional programme in conjunction with the Egyptian Ministry of the Environment and the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency.

The Workshops will focus on SD themes such as:

  • environmental education
  • climate change
  • energy efficiency
  • waste collection and recycling
  • preparing “bankable” projects

In addition, it is hoped this knowledge will enable NGOs working on the ground to contribute effectively to the formulation of the National Strategy for Sustainable Development (NSSD). In a separate initiative, again funded by the European Union, SMAP III TA, the MoE and the EEAA finalized the planning for the NSSD earlier this year.

Members of the press are invited to attend the opening of the Inauguration Workshop, from 10am to 11am on Thursday 15 November, which will be introduced by Dr Atwa (EEAA, Director Regional Branch, Cairo), Dr Mawaheb Adb El Moneam Abu El Azm (EEAA, Chief Execture Officer) and Dr Hartwig Behnfeld (EU-SMAP III TA, Team Leader).
