1- Brazilia will become the world water capital from 18 to 23 March 2018 with the 8th World Water Forum. The Mediterranean region will present and discuss its challenges and good practices with other regions of the world along 6 themes: Water and climate change adaptation and mitigation; Integrated sanitation for all, Water/Energy/Food/Ecosystems Nexus; Urban water reuse;  Managing and restoring ecosystems for water services and biodiversity; Finance for sustainable development. The Secretariat of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) and the Mediterranean Institute for Water (IME) are coordinating this regional process, while each theme is managed experienced Med networks and institutions. The latest findings have been presented and discussed at the 3rd Mediterranean Water Forum in Cairo, 22-24 January 2018. A state of play will be compiled in a Mediterranean report to be released at the WWF8. But the Med experience will also be highlighted in global topics, in particular its vision on water information systems during the sessions "Monitoring, assessment, data and knowledge sharing in transboundary basins" on Tuesday 20/03 (16h30-18h) and "Data and tools to facilitate water management and decision making" on Wednesday 21/03 (14h30-16h) when an handbook on Water Information Systems will be released. 2- The Forum on cooperating and sharing water resources in the Mediterranean held in Cairo on January 22-24 was a step to ''build one voice with all the protagonists of the Mediterranean to bring to the World Water Forum in Brasilia''. The event was organized by the Egyptian national research center for water, by the Mediterranean Water Institute and by the Union for the Mediterranean. On the sidelines of the forum an exhibit called ''Water in the Mediterranean'' was organized. Several side-events were organised back to back with the 3rd med forum, in particular one on science cooperation and knowledge sharing towards sustainable development of water resources in the Mediterranean region with UNESCO. It has two key objectives: sharing information on pressing water resources challenges of the Mediterranean Basin and to discussing efficient scientific cooperation mechanisms aiming to empower all countries of the basin to better manage their water resources. The Mediterranean water knowledge platform was presented as a regional case study for knowledge sharing. Further information on EMWIS website

3- The new World Water Quality web Portal, launched by UNESCO’s International Hydrological Programme (IHP), provides information on freshwater quality at the global scale using remote sensing data. Water quality affects human health, as well as ecosystems, biodiversity, food production and economic growth. While improving water quality worldwide is essential to sustainable development, reliable data is scarce, especially in remote areas and developing countries where monitoring networks and capacity are lacking. The World Water Quality Portal addresses an urgent need to enhance the knowledge base and access to information in order to better understand the impacts of climate- and human-induced changes on water. It will facilitate science-based, informed decision-making for water management and support countries’ efforts in implementing the Sustainable Development Goal on water and sanitation (SDG 6), as well as several other Goals and Targets that are linked directly to water quality and water pollution. 4- The 8th Meeting of the Water Expert Group (WEG) of the Union for the Mediterranean was held on 2 February at the Dead Sea in Jordan, back to back with the annual steering committee meeting of the SWIM-H2020, i.e. the EU programme for Sustainable Water Management and Environment providing support to Med Partner countries.The UfM Water Expert Group (WEG) was mandated by the Euro-Mediterranean Ministerial Conference on Water (22 December 2008, Dead Sea, Jordan) and confirmed by the UfM Ministerial declaration on Water (Malta, 2017). It is comprised of high level representatives from the relevant Ministries and will convene twice a year counting on the participation as well of regional institutions, IFIs and stakeholders as observers. At the Malta Ministerial conference, it was decided to prepare a Mediterranean Water Agenda. At the last WEG meeting 4 priority topics were decided as well as the definition of a financial strategy for the Mediterranean water sector. Two of the 4 priority topics were discussed at the Dead Sea, focusing on nexus issues: the Water-Employment-Migration and Water-Food-Security-Energy-EcoSystems. 5- European Commissioners are discussing a preliminary text showing willingness to mandate measures to increase access to drinking water including setting up and maintaining outdoor and indoor water taps in public spaces. Free provision of drinking water in restaurants, canteens, public buildings and by catering services “will be encouraged”. Such areas of regulation have historically been reserved to the legislatures and regulatory regimes of European Union states. Further information on EMWIS website

6- The importance of ecosystems in water management is growing in the Mediterranean. During the 3rd Mediterranean water forum, under the coordination of EMWIS and the Segura River Basin Authority, several case studies were presented from Spain, Egypt and Tunisia highlighting the benefits from ecosystems restoration measures and how ecosystems could be integrated as green infrastructures. Additional good practices were also collected and discussed to prepare a dedicated session at the WWF8 that will convey the following key messages: i) Ecosystems know no boundaries: they require cooperation and solidarity; ii) ecosystem degradation has to be integrated into pricing of water services; iii) Ecosystems are of great value for the fight against climate change; iv) Maintaining essential productions requires maintaining ecosystem services; v) there will be no achieving the SDGs if we turn our back on the water ecosystems. 7- During the 28th UN-Water Meeting held in Rome early 2018, the Good Practice Guidelines for Water Data Management Policy has been officially launched. These Guidelines are intended to be used by officers responsible for formulating and implementing government strategy to improve water information, with the aim of advancing water policy, planning, management and operations. The Guidelines were prepared under the World Water Data Initiative, on behalf of the United Nations and World Bank High Level Panel on Water.
Later this year, during the World Water Forum in Brasilia in March, the outcomes of the World Water Data Initiative will be showcased alongside other work done under the High Level Panel on Water. Further information on EMWIS website
 

8- The European Commission's Directorate-General for International cooperation and Development (DG DEVCO) organised on 25-26 January 2018, in Brussels, the WEFE NEXUS - SDGs Position Paper Workshop. This project, which is part of the “EC NEXUS Dialogue – Phase I (2016-2018)” had the objective to validate and contribute to a draft report setting a framework for operationalising the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems (WEFE) Nexus outside the European Union. 9- The last issue of the Hydrogeology Journal (Volume 25 Number 6) has a special focus on Mediterranean ground waters. It addresses in particular: Groundwater-based agriculture ; Anthropization of groundwater resources; Considering groundwater use to improve the assessment of groundwater pumping for irrigation; Specifying the differentiated contribution of farmers to groundwater depletion; Groundwater overexploitation: why is the red flag waved? Case study on the Kairouan plain aquifer (central Tunisia); Below the radar: the boom of groundwater use in the central part of the Nile Delta; Can agricultural groundwater economies collapse? 10- In November 2016, the Ministry of Hydraulic and Sanitation of Mauritania has initiated, with the support of UNICEF, a process to improve the monitoring and evaluation of drinking water, sanitation and hygiene. Last December, this process has been extended to water resources with the support of GWP-Med. SEMIDE and the International Office for Water have been selected to make a diagnosis of the monitoring and evaluation of surface and ground water in Mauritania and propose an action plan to improve the process and move toward an integrated National Water Information System. The diagnosis mission took place in December 2017, and the action plan was successfully validated in early February 2018 for the formulation of a unique programme valuing around 6 M€ other 10 years to reinforce the monitoring and evaluation of the whole waster sector, including 4M€ dedicated to water resources monitoring and evaluation. This approach is necessary to allow the country to formulate adaptation and mitigation strategy and investment to face Climate Change impacts. Further information on EMWIS website

11- At various times during Earth’s history, long periods of low temperatures, popularly known as ice ages, were characterized by expanding glaciers and falling sea levels. Vast areas of land that had previously been underwater were exposed to the atmosphere. This new land not only provided habitat for land plants and animals (and early humans) but also hosted vast terrestrial groundwater systems that extended offshore. MARCAN, a 5-year European Research Council–funded project that was launched in January 2017, addresses the role of offshore groundwater in the formation of submarine land forms at continental margins. 12- The European Topic Centre at the University of Malaga, a SWOS project's partner, contributed to a recently published paper on increasing effectiveness of ecosystem services mapping by using key attributes such as robustness, end-user relevance and transparency. 13- Smart management of vineyards in the face of climate change is at the heart of VISCA project. The approach was published last December in the Portuguese magazine Jovens Agricultores nº 112. 14- The Research Promotion Foundation (RPF) of Cyprus, organised the 4PRIMA Conclusive Event in Cyprus, on 18 January 2018, in Larnaca, Cyprus, back to back with the PRIMA General Assembly Meeting, which took place on 17th January 2018. The Event aimed to summarize and disseminate the 4PRIMA efforts and findings with focus on the PRIMA Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA) and the Annual Work Plan. The Event gathered representatives from 4PRIMA partners and boards, representatives/policy makers from the PRIMA Countries, European initiatives related to the Project and a wide selection of stakeholders. In total 47 participants attended the Event.  On February 6, PRIMA  calls for proposals 2018  were lanched, PRIMA programmes will support research and innovation through distinct types of actions/activities: Agro-Food value chain, Farming systems, Management of water. 15- The prototype of dry anaerobic digestion of the sludge of the Waste Water Treatment Plant constructed in Alguazasfor by Life-Anadry project was presented to the Spanish Minister of Water, Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, the city Mayor and the Communities of Irrigators during a site visit last November. During the visit ESAMUR explained the objectives of the project and the work carried out so far. Life-Anadry project aims to demonstrate the technical and economic feasibility of the correct environmental management of sludge in medium to small sized wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in order to transfer the outcomes obtained to other areas with similar problems, in Spain and at international level. 16-  The Council of Agriculture of Murcia region in Spain is carrying out a test at the Centre for Demonstration and Technology Transfer 'El Mirador', in San Javier, to see if the use of ozonised water with foliar applications in the irrigation of broccoli crops helps reduce the damage caused by fungi and bacteria, such as botrytis and sclerotinia. Ozone, as a natural disinfectant, is capable of destroying viruses, bacteria and fungi. It is much more effective than fertilizers, but without it having any toxicity. It is a gas that does not accumulate and leaves no residue. Once its function has been completed, it becomes oxygen. The Region of Murcia is a leading producer of fruits and vegetables in Europe, especially broccoli. It is also the Spanish province exporting the most cabbages. Hence the need and importance of this test, which seeks to grant producers in the area access to more efficient cultivation techniques with a lower consumption of resources such as water. 17- A high-level session to review the Management and Information System for Climate Action (MISCA), was organized by the Ministry of Environment in Beirut, on 10 January 2018. The system, first unveiled at the Beirut Energy Forum and at a dedicated side event during the COP23, was included in Lebanon’s Second Biennial Update Report to the UNFCCC, as a core component of its strategy to build a domestic Monitoring Reporting & Verification (MRV) framework. MISCA is designed to help line ministries track their own progress in achieving sectoral targets and facilitate the sharing of information. Ultimately, this should enhance the effectiveness and transparency of Lebanon’s MRV efforts. The information system has been collaboratively designed by the Lebanese Ministry of Environment (MoE), the Ministry of Energy and Water (MoEW), and the Lebanese Center for Energy Conservation (LCEC), with support from the EU-funded ClimaSouth project. It is anticipated that during the course of implementation, the partnership will be expanded to other line ministries such as the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Public Works and Transport. 18-  The Water Supply Augmentation Project, led by the Lebanese government, aims to increase the volume of water available to the Greater Beirut and Mount Lebanon area where approximately half of the Lebanese population lives. The Project is financed by the World Bank, Islamic Development Bank and Government of Lebanon. Further information on EMWIS website
 

19- AMMAN — Current storage at the country’s major dams is 24.8 per cent lower than what the dams held during this period last year, a senior government official said on Tuesday 2 January, urging the public to ration water consumption. Performance of the current wet season is noticeably weaker compared to the previous years, Minister of Water and Irrigation Hazem El Nasser said in a statement to the press. El Nasser expressed hope that the country would witness this season stronger depressions that would bring adequate rain, highlighting that water storage at the country’s dams last year was higher than current storage by 80 million cubic meters. 20- President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi vowed Monday 15 January to protect Egypt's water supply while striving for peace with the Nile upstream countries of Sudan and Ethiopia, which is building a controversial dam. "Egypt will not go to war with its brothers," Sisi said on state television, although Cairo fears its water supply will be affected by Ethiopia's Grand Renaissance Dam. Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry visited the Ethiopian capital last month for talks on the dam project on the Blue Nile. Egypt relies almost totally on the Nile for irrigation and drinking water, and says it has "historic rights" to the river, guaranteed by treaties from 1929 and 1959. 21- The EBRD has received 38 million euros in grants from the European Union (EU) to blend with its own investment of 186 million euros in the extension and upgrade of wastewater services in the Egyptian governorate of Fayoum, where three million people live. This investment will bring sanitation services to one million people for the first time, connecting their households to the wastewater network and the wastewater plant. The investment will raise the coverage of sanitation services in rural areas from currently just over 30 per cent to almost 90 per cent. The EBRD financing to the Fayoum Water and Wastewater Company is complemented by an EU grant investment grant of 30 million euros and over 7 million  euros for technical assistance. 22- The swollen River Seine in the French capital, Paris, has peaked to 5.84m (19.2ft), about four meters above its normal water level for this time of year. Weeks of rainfall have produced a relentless rise in the water level. Around 1,500 people have been evacuated from their homes in the greater Paris region, while a similar number of homes remained without electricity. Further information on EMWIS website 

23- The Algerian Minister of Water Resources, Hocine Necib, announced Sunday, January 28, 2018 in Illizi, different projects aiming at improving the distribution and quality of drinking water in this wilaya of the extreme South-East of the country.These include a water treatment station in the commune of In-Amenas (with a capacity of 10,000 m3), to be launched soon, and a smaller one planned north of 'llizi. The minister also announced a program to strengthen and improve the management of the Algerian Water supply utility (ADE) with new equipment and staff training in the wilaya of llizi and Djanet. 24- Morocco, committed to the green economy, is about to use the experience of a model country in this area: Finland. A partnership was born Thursday, January 25, 2018 in Casablanca, where the General Confederation of Enterprises of Morocco (CGEM) hosted in its headquarters a large Finnish delegation. Some fifteen companies as well as several public agencies of this Scandinavian country discussed potential cooperation on different sustainable development issues such as: circular economy, water and waste treatment ...Further information on EMWIS website

25- Environmental protection is one of the greatest challenges to EU integration. During the 20th century, Polish industry had an extremely negative impact on the environment, using a lot of energy, water and mineral resources, while polluting air, rivers and lakes. In addition, cities didn’t have appropriate water and waste water infrastructure and a lot of untreated waste water was transported by the Oder and Vistula rivers to the Baltic Sea. Polish experts were aware that they needed know-how, new procedures, new investments and new approaches to tackle this problem. EU integration allowed Poland to develop a huge environmental protection programme. Further information on EMWIS website

26-  Poland’s largest river, the Vistula, will be the home of a new dam combined with a power plant, government officials announced. The project will cost more than 470M euros, according to the country’s environment ministry. As reported by Radio Poland, officials from the environment, energy and inland navigation ministries signed an agreement to go ahead with the project. The dam, combined with an 80 MW hydroelectric power plant, will be built in the village of Siarzewo, not far from an existing dam in the north-central city of Włocławek which has been in operation for over 40 years. Construction work will begin in 2020 with completion scheduled for 2025, the environment ministry said, cited by the PAP news agency. According to Poland’s environment ministry said the new dam would improve flood safety and help restore the navigability of the Vistula, which is over 1,000 km in length and runs across the middle of the country, emptying into the Baltic Sea. 33- Preventing the flooding of the Seine in the Paris – Ile de France region: The risk of the Seine flooding the Ile de France region is a major one. In 2014, the OECD estimated that flooding comparable to the historic 1910 flood could affect up to 5 million citizens and cause damage costing up to 30 billion euros. 39- The 16th EGU-Plinius conference on Mediterranean risks will take place in Montpellier, France, on October 9-12, 2018. The objective of this 2018 EGU topical conference is to provide an interdisciplinary forum for discussions on our current state of knowledge of Mediterranean risks, such as heavy rainfall events, strong winds, sea surges, floods and landslides. This will be achieved by bringing together scientific experts in the fields of meteorology, hydrology, geomorphology, sociology, engineering, but also governmental or private risk management actors.
